Creative tasks about Ukrainian culture

Objectives: at the end of the tasks students will be able to remember a list of words about national holidays,  learn main facts from the  geography, highlight the subject areas  in which they are particularly strong, while pointing out those in which they would benefit by spending more time.

Level and age group: B1, 8- 9  form

1. Word- search” National holidays”

Vocabulary: feast, Christ, resurrection, Trinity, event , Easter, Independence day, religious , official holidays, Labour Day,  Constitution Day, festival

Procedure: 1) Elicit names of the national Ukrainian holidays; 2) Give the students worksheets with word-search. The words may be placed horizontally or vertically. Students read the definitions and find 20 words in a grid. The winner is the person who finds all words faster.

Definitions:

1. This holiday is on the 31^st of December.
2. This holiday is on the 7^th of January.
3. Women get congratulations on that day.
4. It is the feast of Christ’s resurrection.
5. It comes on the 1^st of May.
6. The 9^th of May is ….
7. It is a religious holiday which comes on the 50^th day after Easter.
8. We celebrate it on June, 28.
9. We celebrate it on August, 24.
10. It is your own personal holiday.
11. Holidays connected with religion.
12. These holidays are days off for everybody.
13. A song which is sung on your birthday.
14. It is a day when people don’t have to work.
15. You get it on your birthday.
16. It is a Christmas tree.
17. People often drink it to greet the New Year.
18. We can observe them in parks in the evenings.
19. A special social event when you celebrate something.
20. A special day or a period usually in memory of a religious event.

Procedure:1) pre- teach vocabulary: summits, neighbouring countries , occupy; 2) prepare medals for each right answer. Students answer the questions .Who gives the right answer, gets a medal.
