The subject of the lesson: “Fruit and Berries”.

The objectives of the lesson:

  • to develop pupils’ skills and habits of critical thinking;
  • to develop pupils’ skills and habits of reading;
  • to bring up the interest to English language;
  • to develop students’ independence and self-control in communicative situation;
  • to activate pupils’ speech habits;
  • to practise pupils’ listening comprehension skills.

Equipment: a tape-recorder, a cassette, cards, pictures.

The procedure.

Teacher: Good morning, dear boys and girls!

Pupils: Good morning, dear teacher!

Good morning, good morning,

Good morning to you.

Good morning, good morning,

I am glad to see you too.

Teacher: Do you like to listen to stories?

Pupils: Yes, we do.

Teacher: Would you like to listen to a short story?

Pupils: Yes, we would.

Teacher:   Once upon a time there lived a girl. One day, the girl planted the tree. She watered, watered, and watered it. The tree grew. But look at it! It is unusual. It has got English sounds. Let’s pronounce them and train English pronunciation!

[f], [r], [u:], [t], [b], [e], [r], [i], [z].

And now look at the tree in the picture. We have two words; let’s try to read these

words.

Pupils: Fruit and Berries.

Teacher: Translate these words!

Pupils: Фрукти та ягоди!

Teacher: The topic of our today’s lesson is Fruit and Berries.

Teacher: Look at the pictures! We can see different fruits!

  1. Realization of subject matter.
  2. Work in groups:

Teacher: So, we have a competition today. Our guests will be our jury and will decide who will be the winner of our today’s competition. Dear jury, be attentive and put points for our teams. But let’s ask the names of the teams:

(The children are singing).

My name is cherry.

Teacher: Let’s meet our two teams “Cherry” and “Lemon”!

Teacher: The first task is listening comprehension. It consists of  two games. Let’s start the first game. I’ll say different words, you have to clap your hands when you hear the names of fruit and berries. If the pupils are mistaken, they’ll stand up.

More standing pupils, less points:

A book, a bookcase, a boy, a lemon, a pencil, a gooseberry, a currant, a pencil-box, a table, an apple, a pine-apple, a leaf, leaves, a wolf, a strawberry, a dog, a raspberry, a girl, a school, a melon, a watermelon, a flower, an orange, a house, a gate, grapes, a copy-book, a blackboard, a picture, a viburnum, a dogwood, a teacher, a cook, a businessman.

Teacher: Let’s start the second game.

Each kid will get the card with a fruit or a berry.

I say the words: In the garden I have a lot of fruit, I like an apple (a plum, a nut, etc.)

One, two, three, Apple, stand up!

You should stand up, while I am counting to three.

Teacher: The fourth task is to spell the words, read them and translate them into Ukrainian language. But before let us review the English alphabet.

Let’s sing “ABC – song”:

Teacher: The fifth task is to make up the words with the help of English letters.

Teacher: The sixth task is to read the words.

Teacher: The seventh task is to guess what fruit your opponent – team has got in the bag. You have got only 3 attempts. Start the question as in the example:

  • Is it an apple?
  • Yes, it is.
  • Is it a pear?
  • No, it is not.

Teacher: The eighth task is drawing.

There is a pot on the table.

There are clean sheets of paper in it.

You have to draw such fruit, which you always put into your fruit compote (or which your mother always puts into it).

Pupils:    I put an apple.

I put a plum.

I put a cherry.

I put a raspberry, etc.

III. Reflection.

Teacher: You should answer my questions.

Summing up:

Teacher: Let’s summarize our today’s work during the lesson. We have just finished the competition between two teams “Cherry” and “Lemon”.

As for me both of teams have worked well. But we have the jury and that’s why let’s listen to them and let’s learn who’s become the winner of our today’s competition.

The setting of the hometask:

  • Your hometask is to read and to translate these exercises at home.

The lesson is over.
